Life is wild. (Also, a guide on how to hike to Hanakapi’ai Falls on Kaua’i!) ⬇️

The last time we visited this 300 ft waterfall, all the way back in 2007, we were young, childless, starry-eyed explorers, punch drunk on the prospect of finding new love, and sucking the marrow out of life.

Fast forward 18 years, and here we are with three kids in tow, standing at the very same waterfall, and wondering why it’s taken 18 years to find our way back to this place (not just Hanakapi’ai, but the entire island of Kauai—which is crazy since we live just 45 minutes away!)

Standing at the base of these spectacular falls, which can only be reached foot, it’s amazing to think how much in life changes—and how much of it still stays the same.

In 2007 we camped on the beach (Anini Beach, for you campers out there), and this time we stayed in a 2 bedroom condo with pickleball courts and a pool. 😆

In 2007 we frolicked at the base of the thundering, crystalline falls, and this time we worried about falling rocks—which actually happened and nearly took a guy out! 😳

In 2007 we lived for the moment—what trip were we going to take next? ✈️

This time, even with the stresses of life—work, kids, tuition, marriage—we still like to think we live for the moment; what trip are we going to take next? 🤔

Oh yeah, we almost forgot! Here’s how you can visit, too.⬇️

📍 Hanakapia’ai Falls, Kaua’i

🥾 Distance: 9 miles (round trip)

⏰ Time: 7-8 hours

🎒Bring: Bug spray, shoes that will 100% get muddy, water, snacks, and clothes to swim in the pool by the falls (but seriously, be careful of rocks).

📆 Reservations: Hawai’i residents can visit free of charge and don’t need reservations. Out of state visitors need to make a reservation ($40/person, which you can get online at GoHaena.com), and then ride a shuttle bus out to the trailhead.

It’s a 2 mile walk to Hanakapi’ai Beach, with about 800 ft of elevation gain, and then another 2 miles up to the falls, and you’ll need to cross streams on multiple occasions. It’s a wet, muddy adventure!

5 Amazing Day Trips To Take From Los Cabos 🇲🇽

Believe it or not, there’s a lot more to Baja’s southern tip than margaritas on the beach.🏖️

Sure, Los Cabos is beautiful and relaxing (or can be a raging party on the sand—your pick), but you can also find a lot of outdoor adventure within a two hour drive:

🤿 Snorkel or Dive in Cabo Pulmo

This marine park on Baja’s eastern cape is home to North America’s only coral reefs, and you can swim in a bait ball of 2,000 jacks along with massive groupers and bull sharks. Roads here are dirt and you won’t find resorts, but you can sit at a table just steps from the sea and feast on ceviche and ice cold beer once your boat (literally) pulls back up on the sand.

🥾 Hike to a waterfall at Cascada Sol de Mayo

About 1.5 hours north of Los Cabos, this trail in the Sierra Laguna Mountains leads back to a crystalline watering hole where you can swim at the base of the falls.

Roads are dirt (but you can make it in 2WD), there’s a small entrance fee, the hike is only about half a mile, and you can also check out the nearby oasis and mission town of Santiago.

**Currently closed because of Hurricane Kay, but hopefully it’s open by winter!**

🏄‍♂️ Catch some waves in Los Cerritos

1 hour up the Pacific coast, Los Cerritos is a popular surf break that’s perfect for kids, beginners, newbies—but also accomplished surfers.

The water is shallow for a long way out, and there are plenty of surf schools and local surf shops offering rentals, lessons, and boards.

🐢 Help Release Baby Sea Turtles Hatchlings Outside of Todos Santos

From December-March, you can volunteer with the local non profit Tortugueros Las Playitas to help release baby sea turtle hatchlings into the ocean at sunset.

Super educational and great for kids!

🐋 Swim with whale sharks outside of La Paz

It’s a bit of a drive from the Los Cabos area (about 2-2.5 hours, one way), but it’s worth the wakeup and full day of driving to come face to face with the world’s largest fish—don’t, worry, they don’t have teeth!
