It sounds a little weird (fellow parents will probably get it!), but our three energetic, on-the-go boys are actually the quietest when they’re having the most fun. 😌

Weird, right?

When they’re bored, they’re loud, but when they’re invested in the moment, paying attention, and open to experiencing the activity or action that’s happening right around them, they’re borderline silent—it’s amazing to watch! 😃

🐕On this most recent road trip around Lapland, Finland, we used @getyourguide to book a husky safari outside of Rovaniemi, and while the sleigh ride itself only lasts about a minute (it’s 500m long), the mystique around the husky dogs kept the boys engaged for much longer.

🛷 How, and why, are so many dogs hooked up to a single sled? Why is their fur so beautiful and soft? See how they anchor the sled to the snow in case they suddenly take off?

🇫🇮Here in Finland, huskies have been used for hunting and transport for hundreds (even thousands) of years, and our somehow the boys seemed to grasp the idea that in a world without roads—a world without cars—that this is how people would really get around: Being pulled by a whole team of dogs!

Your mini guide to roadtripping in Lapland 🇫🇮⬇️

✈️ Fly into Kittila (via Helsinki) on Finn Air.

🎿 Stay 2-3 days in Levi or Kittila (book accommodation early if coming around Christmas and New Years). Enjoy the sweet Levi town and ski your heart out! We recommend South Pointe ski area for families since it has the best facilities for families withyounger children.

🎅 Drive south towards Rovaniemi and take the kids to Santa’s Village! You really only need a day or two here. LOTS of things for kids to do—snowmobiling, reindeer feeding, sleigh rides, snowman world, meet Mr and Mrs Claus AND see where Santa gets his mail!

🛷 Continue south to Ranua where we would recommend a husky sleigh ride or ice skating adventure with @luplandi. We really liked this area more than Rovaniemi. Felt a little more low key, and everything was less expensive. Also a great chance of seeing the northern lights since the small village is darker than Rovaniemi and surrounded by wilderness and forest.

🚗 We flew back to Helsinki out of Oulu— the city where Kyle had originally flown into to pick up the rental car and make it a round-trip rental, which literally saved over $1000 then renting one in Rovaniemi . 🤪What we will do to save money to be able to afford travel! 🤙

So here’s the scene ⬇️

You’re in Lapland, Finland, at a cabin in the woods down a long, snow covered road.

🥶The air temperature is 1*F (-17*C), and the cabin has a place where you can take a natural cold plunge in a hole cut out in the lake.

🧊The fresh water is literally freezing (ice blocks form on the surface within minutes, and you have to break them up with a metal pole), BUT— there’s a cozy, very warm sauna just a few short steps away.

Do you go for a dip? Would your KIDS go in?

Is that this amazingly epic, or insane? 🤷‍♂️🤷🏼‍♀️

Also, did you know that saunas were actually invented here in Finland, and the combo of heat and cold has incredible healing benefits for your muscles?

❄️In case you’re worried it’s not for kids, the local family said their 3 and 5 year old do this often because their father grew up doing it too, so when the boys heard that they were determined to try it! 😊

If you’ve ever wanted to go to Finland (with kids!), and feel like all you see are fancy igloos, or couples relaxing in saunas or hot tubs, we are sharing our week of how to do Finland with kids on a budget during the most expensive time of the year 🤗

Seriously—we got so excited to go to Lapland, and when we saw that we could get tickets on miles we booked it without realizing that Christmas through the first week in January is the most expensive time to visit Finland 🤷🏼‍♀️

BUT, we managed to still do A LOT, and were absolutely blown away by how much we LOVED it 🤯
